Significant Ornaments: Island Life

My husband's work assignment transported us to Trinidad and Tobago, a two-islands nation located off the northeast coast of Venezuela. We traded our "life in the suburbs" comfort for the land where the steel pan originated.

Days after arriving in Trinidad, the earth shook under our feet. Our first (and not the last) earthquake. What was I doing here? Surely, the Lord did not bring me here to kill me. At the end of that stress filled day, Creator God provided a glorious sunset!

We desired to experience as much as possible.  We marveled the leatherback turtles nesting at Grand Riviere, and the scarlet ibises (the national bird of T&T) roosting in the deep green mangroves of Caroni Swamp. We sipped coconut water out of its shell. We savored doubles (two flat pieces of fried bread filled with curried chickpeas), and shark & bake. I learned to play "Amazing Grace," and "The Entertainer" on the steel pan.

New things, life-changing things, were born. I started my first blog - Callaloo Tales: Our Adventures in the Caribbean and Beyond. I planted a "Praying Grandmothers" group.

We're grateful for the opportunity to live among the expats and the locals and experience different cultures.  The friends we made touched our lives forever, and we will never be the same. 


For our 2006 significant ornament, I purchased a Trinidad-shaped souvenir key chain, and tied red, green, and gold Christmas ribbon around it.


My Trinidadian friend, Lee, gave me the "palm tree" pottery ornament when we repatriated in 2008.

Out of the Fire...

Something explosive cracked above our heads. As my husband investigated, neighbors rushed to our front door, informing me our house was on fire. Lightning hit the roof, and the attic burned. Volunteer fire fighters rushed to the scene. Dale and I stood watching in disbelief. Thankfully, the blaze was extinguished and no one suffered injuries.
 
Displaced for five and a half months during reconstruction gave us a new appreciation for home and for the fire fighters who risked their lives to save it.
 
That experience of loss and rebuilding led us to begin a new Christmas tradition - the significant ornament - to symbolize the most meaningful event of that particular year. I purchased a panda fire fighter ornament. It was 1997. Years later, we have a box full of special tree ornaments- each with a story.


 As I pull each significant ornament out of its storage, I remember the stories. As the fire fighting panda is unwrapped and hung, I whisper a prayer for first responders.

Thank you, Lord, for brave men and women who risk their lives to protect people and property in crisis times. Bless them with wisdom, strength, and courage. Protect them from harm and injury. Protect their families. Meet their every physical, emotional, and spiritual need. Comfort those who mourn loved ones lost in the line of duty. In the Name of Jesus, who gives life and peace...amen.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I love Thanksgiving Day. I love everything about it- the food, the table settings, the decorations, the gathering of families and friends, and the opportunity to reflect and thank our Lord for all He has done for us.

My challenge is to maintain a thankful attitude throughout the year. Keeping a gratitude journal helps me  focus on giving thanks. Are you aware of the benefits of having an attitude of gratitude? Check out my Gratitude post.

It's a Party!

I hosted my mom's 80th birthday celebration this week. Twenty-six sweet friends from church and our prayer group joined us.
I chose a "tea room" theme. Each table was uniquely decorated. I purchased some flowers and a few ornaments, and used my own crystal bowls and vases. However, lest you think I am a "Martha Stewart" type, let me set the record straight... a beautiful, talented,  twenty-four-year-old  event coordinator volunteered to help. I am not responsible for what you are about to see. I only took the photos. My creativity was not required.
 




Though not an original idea, I did do this:
 
 
Place some marbles or accent beads in the bottom of a vase. Insert flowers. Fill with water. Add a floating candle on top. Very easy and inexpensive.
 
I hired a caterer. Chef Pennye owner of  MyLeigh's Morsels prepared a wonderful tea room menu. Spring Mixed Greens tossed with Honey Lime Vinaigrette Dressing, Southwest Chicken Salad on Croissant, and choice of Caramelized Onions and Mushroom or Broccoli Cheese Quiche. This plating is served on my grandmother Anna's china.
 
 
For dessert, we ate German Chocolate birthday cake, followed by a chocolate fountain with strawberries, pretzels, marshmallows, and cinnamon graham crackers for dippers.



 
I played "Happy Birthday" on the steel pan. This photo is from July 2007 when I played the song for my husband. I took lessons when we lived in Trinidad.
 


 
Classic tunes from the Great American Songbook (by Rod Stewart) was my musical choice: "What a Wonderful World," "It Had to be You," "The Way You Look Tonight," " 'S Wonderful," "Fly Me to the Moon," and my favorite "Moon River" were a few of the selections.
 
Friends and family members from across the country sent birthday card greetings and memories. My mom, Lorraine, appreciates your good wishes and sentiments.

Reflections from a Former Island Girl

Where, oh where, is my steel pan sheet music? I want to play.  I need to play. It's been too long.

When hubby and I lived in the island nation of Trinidad and Tobago, I took steel pan lessons. I loved it.  And, I've missed it. But, I've lost skill.

I'm hosting an 80th birthday party for my mom. I want to play 'Happy Birthday" on my steel pan. Practice is required. I can do this. I will do this.

My steel pan teacher,  Lydia would be happy I play. Thank you, Lydia, wherever you are. You enriched my life.

The Family Research Council hosted the "I Stand Sunday" Rally at Grace Community Church on Nov. 2, 2014. Its message focused on standing for religious freedom in the United States.
 
Dr. Ronnie Floyd, President of the Southern Baptist Convention, said, "The greatest need for America is for the church to revive."
 
November's First Friday Intercession is for The Church.


LORD God Almighty, how excellent is Your Name! You alone are worthy of all our worship and praise! Thank You for Your church. Thank You for every spiritual blessing in Christ. Thank You for the gifts You have given its members to serve one another. Forgive us for turning from You, our first love. Cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Help us to hear, understand, and obey the Holy Spirit's direction. Help us to live as children of light, in holiness. Revive us, and heal our land. May we speak Your truth with boldness, and in love. May we bless, rather than curse, others. In the Mighty Name of our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ...amen.

The Ugly and The Beauty

My book club read The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh. Victoria Jones grew up in the foster care system. Feeling unloved and unworthy, Victoria disrespected and rebelled against foster parents until they sent her back. I too would have sent her packing- not tolerating Victoria's bad behavior very long - my eyes blinded to the beauty, worth, potential in her. In failing to see Victoria's beauty, I saw my ugly.
 
All experience pain. Everyone has been hurt, wounded, broken. There's ugliness in all of us. But we are created in God's image, and there is beauty and worth in people. I need to search for it, dig deeper. Find in the unlovable and difficult individuals the treasure of potential and gifts God gave them. And remember, God demonstrated His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5: 8).
 
 
Detached and wary, Victoria Jones learned to communicate through the Victorian language of flowers. She taught people to express their true feelings through the bouquets they sent. In general, lilies symbolize "majesty"; but, have other meanings depending on the color.

Jehovah Raah: The LORD is My Shepherd

What was I thinking? I chose the least budget-friendly apartment. It was an illogical decision. Yet, I didn't change my mind. It was the summer of 1985. I was a widow with a baby son...and about to bite off more than I thought I could financially chew.

Since then, I've learned I really am a sheep. A very clueless one at that. But I also realize I have a tender, loving Savior Shepherd who leads me, guides me, and gets me where I need to be in spite of myself, no matter how long it takes.

We moved into that Lubbock, TX apartment complex. Weeks later, a male college student moved into the unit next door. That young man would become my future husband, best friend, and father to my little boy.

We married in 1988 and moved to Houston. Life has been a great adventure! We have never been in want. Jesus Christ, our Shepherd - Jehovah Raah-  has provided green pastures of provision and still waters  which have nourished and refreshed our souls. He led us places where we were taught by His pastors and loved by His flock. We've walked through the valley of the shadow of death, experiencing miscarriages, and grieving the loss of  friends and family members. His Presence comforted us. We are thankful.

His goodness and mercy continue to follow me throughout my life. I delight in the promise that I will dwell in the LORD's house forever.

Powerful Influences

I read an article that stated the average child spends more than 40 hours a week in front of a screen. This does not include computer time at school. That's a lot of time watching television, playing video games, texting, and using social media!
 
The media and entertainment industries are powerful influences on our children and culture. This month, my "First Friday Intercession" is for these culture shapers.
 
 
Father God in Heaven, You are Sovereign over all!
 
Please give parents wisdom to limit their children's screen time. Help them to understand their responsibility for what comes into their homes. Give our children wisdom and a strong conscience to know and understand what is right in Your eyes. Help them to make good reading and entertainment choices. May their thoughts be pleasing to You.
 
Thank You for strategically placing Your people within the sports, media, and entertainment industries. Help them to be light, and show Your love and grace to others. Give them strength to be bold and true to Your word. Bless them with creativity and favor. May truth and morality be presented by our nation's media. Amen.

An Unexpected Gift

Life holds unexpected moments.

Two months after having a brain tumor removed, my mother-in-law went to be with the LORD. The family expected recovery, but death came instead.

Norma lived a good life. She was married to her husband for 59 years. Together, they raised four sons- all good men. She accomplished her dream to visit Israel and was baptized in the Jordan River. She loved Southern gospel music.

At her gravesite, a family member texted me a picture of the Texas sky. A brilliant blue, cloud-streaked sky.




Noticing a bird-shaped cloud formation, I zoomed in on the image. It was a dove. A symbol of The Presence of the Holy Spirit, our Comforter, hovering over us.
 


In the midst of sorrow and sadness, someone lifted their eyes to the heavens, capturing the dove cloud image. An unexpected gift. An "I am with you always..." moment (Matthew 28: 20).

As we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, our comforting God is with us. And I am thankful.

First Friday Intercession: Grateful Spirits

Loving heavenly Father, every good and perfect gift is from You. You alone are worthy of our praise and worship.

Thank You for salvation through Jesus, Your grace, and Your mercy. Thank You for Your faithfulness, and for Your protection. Thank You for our daily bread.

When we fail to give You thanks, may we be quick to humble ourselves, confess our ingratitude, and seek Your forgiveness. Thank You for forgiving us.

Help us, as parents and grandparents, to model a spirit of gratitude. Help our children and grandchildren  develop an acute awareness of Your good gifts and Presence in their daily lives. Remind them to pray with thanksgiving in all circumstances. Help them to express thanksgiving and praise to You. Let an attitude of gratitude be their holy habit.  Amen.

Mimi & Granpa Camp 2014: Acrylics Art

As I planned for our third annual "Mimi & Grandpa Camp," I searched for interesting craft ideas for little boys. I thought our grandson would enjoy this airplane craft (and I was right!). It's from Parents.com. All you need is wooden clothes pins, wooden crafts sticks, glue, foam, acrylic paints, and brushes. My husband assembled the airplanes beforehand. He cut the stabilizer from a foam cube. By adding a magnet strip to the underside, the airplane becomes a handy fridge magnet.
 
 
 After the grandkids painted planes, Joy painted faces. This was not my idea; but, I liked it! Neither child had skin sensitivity issues caused by the acrylic paint. However, I learned after the fact, there is paint formulated to use on skin. So, I recommend face paint (rather than acrylic) if you try this at your next birthday party. The   paint easily came off hours later as the children swam.

Mimi & Grandpa Camp 2014: Day 1

My husband and I started a fun tradition with our grandchildren- Mimi & Grandpa Camp. We plan outings, crafts, cooking activities, and other fun things to make special memories. In our living room, we set up a tent where our grands sleep.

Our Day 1 highlights included a trip to Houston's Memorial City Mall where we ate Chick Fil A, and  rode the carousel and the train. Grandpa took our little Buddy to the indoor play area, while I took the girls to the American Girl Store's hair salon. The girls chose their dolls' hairstyles.

Back at our house, we swam, and ate chicken spaghetti for dinner. It's one dish they all love! And because it's one of their favorites, I make it often!


Here's the recipe:

Chicken Spaghetti

8 oz. spaghetti
1 - 1 1/4 pounds cooked chicken. I like using rotisserie chicken.
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 can cream of celery soup
1/2 - 3/4 cup sliced and sautéed mushrooms. Or, you can use a small can of mushrooms. Mushrooms are optional.
1 cup ( or less) sour cream (regular or reduced-fat)
1/2 cup milk
1 - 1/2 cups shredded Swiss cheese
2 teaspoons Old Bay spice
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon garlic powder


Mix soups, sour cream, milk, cheese, and spices in saucepan. Add chicken and mushrooms. Using low heat, bring to simmer. Stir until cheese is melted and mixture is hot and bubbly. Pour over cooked spaghetti, and mix well. Serve with fresh fruit, and green salad or raw veggies (such as broccoli or carrots).

Store shelves are well-stocked with school supplies. Teachers, students, and parents are gearing up for a brand new school year. Please remember our nation's teachers in your prayers.

LORD God Almighty, wisdom comes from You. We ask you bless our teachers with wisdom as they prepare to teach the students they will impact this year. Bless them with energy, endurance, and strength. Encourage them, and give them creative strategies to help students reach their full potential. Give educators favor with parents, administrators, and community leaders. Fill each teacher with Your love and compassion. Protect each classroom from harm, and fill our schools with the peace of Christ. Protect teachers and their families, bless them with good health, and provide for their every need. In the Saving Name of Jesus, amen.

Summer Reading - One Thousand Gifts

I love books.  "Too many books, too little time" describes me perfectly. Books are a gift. So are book recommendations.

My college roommate, Karen, recommended  One Thousand Gifts - A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are by Ann Voskamp. I read it, and I hope you'll read it too.


 

Ann Voskamp is a New York Times Best Selling author, and homeschooling mom of six. She and her husband farm in Ontario. She writes for DaySpring, and has spoken at Women of Faith events. Ann is also an advocate for Compassion International.

After experiencing the childhood tragedy of her sister's death, Ann Voskamp shares her discovery of "eucharisteo" - to give thanks (Luke 22:19), and the challenge to journal one thousand gifts. Ann develops a deeper awareness of God's grace and goodness, all around, right where she lives. In the mundane, the mess, the motherhood challenges, the anxious moments...she counts. Daily life is full of God's gifts. In expressing gratitude, Ann experiences joy, and a greater desire for God's presence.

Ann Voskamp succeeds in challenging the reader to practice thanksgiving in every situation - good or bad. As I drove past a dad and his young daughter riding bikes, I immediately thought, "That's a gift."  I realized the personal impact of One Thousand Gifts. I'm inspired to live eyes-open alert, counting my blessings...A grandparent-honoring country song...little fingers plinking out first piano recital pieces... red velvet cake balls and birthday ice cream... rain soaking a parched earth...gospel brunches.

Perspective

Perspective is defined as "the proper or accurate point of view or the ability to see it."

Rumbling thunder combined with sharp cracks of Independence Day fireworks agitated our blue heeler sending her into a skittish tailspin. Standing calm and composed, I knew Chloe was safe from harm. I understood there was nothing to fear. But it was not this blue heeler's perspective. Eager to escape to kennel safety, she did not maintain a  posture of security. Huddled. Tense.  Fear in eyes. Regardless of calm assurance, she continued deep-throated growls at dark sky booming.
 
What was no surprise to me was upsetting and unnerving for our rambunctious cattle dog. Chloe could not see the whole picture. She lacked my perspective. But she knew who to run to when  terrified. She trusts me... at least sometimes.

Come to think of it, I'm not so different. In her eyes, I saw me. I too am unnerved by life's upheavals. Panic, fear, and doubt set in when my world shakes. I, like Chloe, don't have the ability to see the whole picture either.

But God, Creator of heaven and earth, has a different perspective. "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways," says the LORD. "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts." (Isaiah 55: 8- 9). The LORD not only sees the entire picture, He is in control of it.

Like Chloe, my understanding is limited. Like Chloe, my world sometimes trembles. And like Chloe, I need to run to my trustworthy Master, for under His wings, there is refuge (Psalm 91:4).

It is for Freedom...

Americans commemorate the nation's declaration of independence from Great Britain every July fourth. Throughout history, wars have been fought to set people free from tyranny. The most significant battle of all time was fought on the hill of Golgotha, where Jesus Christ, Son of God and Son of Man, gave His life for all people. Christ's sacrifice set people free from sin and death, and defeated God's enemy. "So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don't get tied up again in slavery to the law." (Galatians 5:1 NLT).

 
Jesus, by your power, we are made free. You conquered sin and death on the cross. You are the Savior of the world and the victorious King of kings! Thank you for sacrificing your life for us! We are grateful for the freedom we have in Christ. We need your strength to keep us from sin's entanglement. As we seek Your word, help us to live as free people. In Your Mighty Name...amen.

Influence

One of my summer 2014 "Bucket List" items is to complete Influence- Living and Sharing a Life of Wisdom, a Bible study by Jan Silvious and Pam Gillaspie. It's a study on mentoring. A big lesson I've learned is mentoring does not require an appointment. It can take place in an instant. As I spend time with older, wiser women, I strive to listen, observe, pay attention, and learn from them. I keep an on-going list of insights I've gained. Here are five words of wisdom I've received from Bobbye, the founder of our grandmothers prayer group:
  • Refrain from giving unwanted advice.
  • Encourage! Encourage! Encourage!
  • Pray for your descendants and their world.
  • Plant "seeds of wisdom" into the lives of others, and trust God for the results.
  • Be a good listener, and avoid trying to fix another's problems.

That's good and wise counsel. What insight has a person of influence shared with you?

Follow the Feet

I attend a free senior citizen line dance class at my local rec center.

Merriam-Webster defines "line dance" as a "dance done by a group of people who stand next to each other in a line and who all perform the same movements."

Line dancing provides me exercise and mental stimulation. I get frustrated, sometimes, because my brain doesn't always get the steps, or I have difficulty remembering the pattern sequence. But, I refuse to quit. I will NOT give up! I'm learning patience, and to not compare myself to others who've been dancing for years.

Not only am I learning something new and mentally stimulating, line dancing helps build my confidence. I feel really good about myself once I've successfully learned a dance!

Another benefit of line dancing is meeting new people. Many have encouraged my to hang in there and give it several months. They taught me to stand in the middle of the group, so each time we turn, I have an experienced dancer to follow. Watch someone's feet. Imitate them. Observe carefully, and do what they do.

A new woman joined the class. She stood in the back row behind me. After a few rotations, I noticed she was watching my feet. "Oh, please don't watch me," I thought. "Please watch someone else. I'm not very good." I wanted to tap her on the shoulder, and direct her attention to a better dancer.

As much as I didn't want her to watch me, the truth is... people are watching me. Some one. Some where. Always.

Paul exhorted the Corinthian church, "Imitate me, just as I imitate Christ." (1 Cor. 11:1). The transliterated word "mimetes" means "imitator." Paul modeled Christ in action and speech, and taught others to do the same.
 
I'm blessed to have God-given mentors-  individuals who strive to imitate Christ's perfect example. I'm grateful for their wisdom, love, and encouragement. Gracious women who humbly serve, and reflect God's truth, light, and love to others. Women whose footsteps I can follow.
 
And, that's good reason to get up and dance!

Blessing Madison

Blessing others invokes God's favor and protection on them. I wrote this blessing for my niece, Madison. I desired to speak affirming words expressing my hope and prayer for her future.  I read it during her high school graduation celebration.



Congratulations on your high school graduation and all your accomplishments. As Moses blessed the tribes of Israel before they entered the Promised Land, I bless you today as you enter a new season of promise, possibility, and potential.

I bless you with wisdom that you may live a long and honorable life.

I bless you with strength and courage to stand firm in your faith without compromise.

I bless you with self-control to keep your head in every situation always remaining watchful and alert.

I bless you with speech that is gentle, encourages, and lovingly speaks the truth.

I bless you with a passion to pray powerfully, continually, and with thanksgiving.

I bless you with peace when life's storms threaten to blow you off course and overwhelm you.

I bless you with generosity that you may be an extravagant giver of love, mercy, kindness, grace, and forgiveness.

Madison, you have known God's Word from infancy. The LORD your God loves you with an everlasting love. He is faithful to His promises. He will never leave you. He is your protector, provider, refuge, salvation, and peace. He is your Great I AM. May Yahweh bless you and protect you; may Yahweh make His face shine on you and be gracious to you; may Yahweh look with favor on you and give you peace.

In Honor of Fathers

My prayer group prays one scripture for our grandchildren every month. For June, we are praying Ephesians 6:4 - "And fathers, don't stir up anger in your children, but bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord" (Holman Christian Standard Bible).
 
My  "First Friday Intercession" is for fathers.
 

 
Our loving heavenly Father, You are good, faithful, and righteous. You alone are the one perfect Father. Thank you for the physical and spiritual fathers You have given each of us. Help us to show honor to these men. And help fathers to love their children more, and to teach them Biblical truth. Help fathers to manage their resources wisely. Bless them with wisdom and courage, and strengthen their faith. Raise up men of integrity in this generation. Help fathers grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. "Flat Liz" & "Flat Stanley"

My North Dakota cousins, Cassie and Abbey, visited us during Spring Break.  Their mom, Liz, wanted to visit also, but her work schedule didn't allow it.

In order to include her mom, and inspired by the children's book, Flat Stanley, by Jeff Brown, Cassie created "Flat Liz." Later, Cassie compiled a digital book about their Texas adventure with "Flat Liz."

"Flat Liz" flew to Texas with Cassie and Abbey. Flat Liz's Lone Star State experience included:

Johnson Space Center
 
and a Blue Bell ice cream tasting party!
 
"Flat Liz" also went on a road trip to San Antonio where she visited The Alamo, strolled along the River Walk, and met more cousins.
 
There's no denying "Flat Liz" had a fun-filled and memorable trip to Texas. But, all good things must come to an end. Tucked safely away in Cassie's purse, "Flat Liz" returned to North Dakota.
 
"Flat Stanley" did not remain flat, and neither did "Flat Liz." After being flattened when a bulletin board fell on him, Stanley Lambchop returned to his real shape. And "Flat Liz" returned to hers.

Becoming a grandmother. It still overwhelms me. Congratulations, cousin! Grandparenting is one of life's most wonderful seasons. There are so many fun things to do with the grandchildren...laughing, dancing, singing, praying, listening, playing, and reading.
 
Dr. Seuss, Ramona, Amelia Bedelia, and Flat Stanley. But above all these, may this little one, born in the image of God, grow to know the Author and Perfecter of our faith, Jesus Christ.
 
 
Stanley Lambchop accomplished much as "Flat Stanley." He became a kite his brother, Arthur, flew. Stanley's family mailed him to visit friends. See Flat Stanley for additional ideas. It's a great way to chronicle your children's school year or summer.

Beach Vows

After reading an article about weddings in Seventeen magazine, I decided I wanted to get married on a beach at sunset. Jeans and bare feet would suit me fine. Somewhere. Someday.

I never let that dream go.

Fast forward the calendar thirty-five years. Our 25th wedding anniversary was about 18 months away. It was time to make my teenage dream come true. To celebrate our silver anniversary, we would renew our vows on a beach.

The destination- Oahu, Hawaii. Seven days. With our son, daughter-in-law, and three grandchildren.

We planned and saved for over a year. We determined to stick to a budget. Going into debt was not an option. That's not how we roll.

I chose Oahu, because I wanted to visit Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial; and I've already been to Maui and Kawaii.

I selected Aloha Forever Weddings as our coordinator. Rev. Mark and Diane Yasuhara have been married over 40 years, and performed with Billy Graham crusades.

Our vow renewal ceremony was a Waialae Beach Park. It's a secluded and quiet beach, located near Honolulu. Accompanied by the autoharp, Rev. Mark sang the Hawaiian Wedding Song, and prayed in Hawaiian and English. Placid waves provided soothing background music. After the ceremony, Rev. Mark sang "Savior Like a Shepherd Lead Us" also in Hawaiian and English. I splurged on a photographer and videographer to record our special memories. It was a lovely experience. Rev. Mark made it so, and by the time we said good-bye, he felt like family.

 
 
 
During our visit, we went to Pearl Harbor, Waimea Valley, Halona Blowhole, Kailua Beach Park (my favorite beach), the North Shore, Haleiwa, and Hanaua Bay. We attended a luau, and watched fireworks on Waikiki Beach. One day, we had lunch at Rainbow Drive-in. This eating establishment specializes in Hawaiian plate lunches, and was featured on Food Network's Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives.

It was a trip of a lifetime, and enjoying it with my family was more than teen-age self ever hoped for!

My Summer 2014 Bucket List

I love the movie The Bucket List. It's the story of two terminally ill men who accomplish things they want to do before they die.

I decided to make my own "bucket list."  Projects I need to complete. Places I want to visit. Plans for personal development. Some are fun. Others, not so much.

Here's my summer 2014 list:

1. Visit Houston's Holocaust Museum.
2. Explore Houston's tunnel system.
3. After six  levels, graduate from waltz. Woo Hoo!
4. Paint our home office.
5. Declutter my closet.
6. Host 3rd annual "Mimi & Grandpa Camp."
7. Plan my mom's 80th birthday celebration.
8. Complete Influence Bible study (Precept Ministries).
9. Publish 18 blog posts (between May 26 - Sept. 1).
10. Finish ABC Scripture albums.
11. Compile a family photo album for my son.
12. Write a biographical sketch about an ancestor.

Twelve items. That's plenty of productivity. Besides, a girl needs time to take afternoon naps occasionally.

First Friday Intercession: In Honor of Mothers


Heavenly Father, we thank you for the gift of mothers- both physical and spiritual. We are grateful for mothers who lived faithful lives, trusting You in all things. May we, as mothers and grandmothers, be diligent to pass the legacy of faith we inherited to our children and grandchildren. Bless all mothers with strength and wisdom. We ask for your divine protection over their families, provide for every need, and fill their homes with Your peace. Give each mother and child, a heart that seeks You. May every mother speak with wisdom and give faithful instruction to her family. May each mother manage her household wisely.  Bless mothers with patience, and fill  their hearts with Your love. In the Name of Jesus, our Savior and Lord... amen.

Seven Scriptures to Pray for Your Descendants

I'm part of a grandmothers prayer group. We meet once a month to pray for our grandchildren and their world. Each month we pray one Scripture for all of the grandchildren. The following is a list of seven Bible verses we've prayed.

  • "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path." Psalm 119: 105.
  • "Blessed are they who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart." Psalm 119: 2.
  • "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." Proverbs 3: 5-6. 
  • "If you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." Romans 10: 9.
  • "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity." 1 Timothy 4: 12.
  • "Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength." Deuteronomy 6: 5.

Easter Prayer

 
Our Father God in Heaven,

You are holy! We thank you for loving us so much that you sent your Son, Jesus, as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. We rejoice Jesus is risen and reigns forever!

Help our friends and family members comprehend your great love. May each one confess "Jesus is Lord", and believe in their hearts that you, Father God, raised Jesus from the dead. May they all call upon your name and be saved, and live the abundant life you have promised. Give each the desire and strength to walk in love, truth, and righteousness. In the name of our risen Savior...amen.

Resurrection Rolls


"Jesus is not here; He has risen, just as He said..."
Matthew 28: 6
 
 
At Easter season, the grandkids and I make resurrection rolls. It's a fun way to remind us  the tomb is empty, and Jesus is alive. You need one can crescent roll dough, one bag  of large marshmallows, melted butter, and a mixture of cinnamon and sugar.
 

 
The marshmallow represents Christ's body.
Dip the marshmallow in the melted butter. 

 
Roll the marshmallow in the cinnamon and sugar mixture.
These represent the oils and spices used to anoint Christ's body.
 
 
Take a marshmallow snack break!
 
 
 Take one triangle section of crescent roll dough.
This represents the tomb.
Wrap the dough around marshmallow, sealing the seams well.
  
 
 Bake according to crescent roll package directions.
 
 
After baking, the resurrection rolls should look like this...
 
 
 ...and not this. If rolls aren't sealed well, you've got a sticky mess!
And then you have to explain  Jesus really did not melt...

 
After cooling, break open the tomb. Christ is risen!
Eat the rolls (they taste like cinnamon rolls), and celebrate God's amazing love!

First Friday Intercession: Businesses

My motivation to pray for businesses comes from learning Chick-fil-A was the number one U.S. chicken chain in 2013. Chick-fil-A, located  mostly in the south, has less than half the stores as its competitor KFC.
 
As a customer of Chick-fil-A, I know they have a great product, excellent customer service, and a good system for moving cars through the drive-through line quickly.  Because of the owner's faith,  Chick-fil-A is  closed on Sundays.
 
My North Dakota cousins, Cassie and Abbey, visited us during their Spring Break. Chick-fil-A was on their list of places to eat. Even "Flat Liz" enjoyed the experience! (More about "Flat Liz's adventures in the Lone Star State" to follow!)

Berry Good Bread


I hate baking. Okay, "hate" is a strong word. I dislike baking. Because baking requires measuring. And I don't like measuring. To avoid baking, I delegate the job.
 
However, I do make exceptions: Christmas time, and strawberry picking season. And like Christmas, strawberry picking is more enjoyable when you add kids to the experience.
 
 
 
We fill our buckets to the brim. Although "fresh" is the best way to eat a strawberry, a few will find their way into muffins, bread, or a sauce for ice cream. 
 
This is one of my favorite recipes starring strawberries. I found a basic recipe on the internet, and then tweaked it. Not only do I dislike measuring, I don't follow recipe directions very well either. This recipe makes one loaf.
 
 
Strawberry Walnut Bread
 
 
Ingredients:
 
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 1/3 cup chopped fresh strawberries
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon Mexican vanilla (or regular vanilla)
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2/3 cup chopped walnuts (or pecans)

 
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour 9 x 5 inch loaf pan.
2. Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl.
3. Beat eggs, oil, and vanilla together.
4. Make a well in the center of dry ingredients, and pour egg mixture in well. Stir ingredients until moistened.
5. Fold in berries and walnuts.
6. Pour into pan, and bake approximately one hour or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
7. Cool a few minutes before removing from pan. Enjoy!
