Treasures

"On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh." Matthew 2:11 (NIV)

What are you doing with your treasures? The Magi came from the east for to worship the Christ child. They brought gifts- gold, frankincense, and myrrh. These gifts were precious, rare, valuable, expensive, and significant.

In her book, Legacy of Prayer: A Spiritual Trust Fund for the Generations, Jennifer Kennedy Dean writes, "We can leave behind for our descendants a spiritual trust that can never be stolen, squandered, or lost. The words we speak in prayer, are living and active vehicles of God's power. Our prayers are "stored up" in the spiritual realm, to be released at exactly the ripe moment."

In todays news, we hear unsettling phrases such as "Recession", "Economic Crisis", "Bailouts", and "Bankruptcy". Let's respond by focusing on the One to whom the whole earth belongs (Psalm 24:1), and making spiritual deposits that matter for eternity!

Father God, this Christmas season and in the New Year to come, help us to focus on our true treasure, Jesus Christ, and to diligently store up prayers in heaven on behalf of our descendants that will be answered in Your perfect timing. Amen.

Have a blessed Christmas! May the grace and peace of the LORD be with you!

Christmas Wishes

Our oldest granddaughter emailed us her "Christmas Wish List". She requested a butterfly net and book, a doll, clip-on earrings, a purse, and all things sparkly- shoes, bracelets, necklaces, rings, hair clips, lip gloss and powder. And then, there's my favorite- "a beautiful princess dress that reaches to my ankles".

I hope she gets it all! But I do have my own wish list for Joy:

My prayer is that like the shepherds, she will hurry to the Christ child, like the wise men she will seek Him, like the angels she will praise Him, and like His Father she will love Him. I pray she will believe Him and make room for Him in her life. May she live "happily-ever-after" with the Lover of her soul and Prince of Peace... Jesus the Messiah.

My wish for her is my wish for you as well. Christmas blessings to you and yours!

What are your Christmas wishes?

Jesus in Me

Humans inherit familial features, such as Grandma Joan's curly hair,  Papa Joe's brown eyes, or Uncle Henry's pointed nose. These features remind us of particular relatives. Who do you resemble? Who do people see in you?

Jesus Christ - Immanuel - became flesh and came to live among us (John 1:14). Sharing in our humanity, He experienced hunger, grief, pain, sorrow, loneliness, disappointment, and death. Jesus, God Incarnate, was tempted in every way, just as we are, yet lived a sinless life. Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring us to God (1 Peter 3: 18). Buried and raised from the dead, He gives His Spirit to live in us (John 14: 16-17).

Apostle Paul wrote, "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me" (Gal. 2: 20). Paul exhorts believers to put to death evil practices, and put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator (Col. 3: 5-10). Meditate on Colossians 3: 1-17. What do you need to put away, and what will you put on, so that others can more clearly see Jesus in you?

This Christmas season, may Immanuel - God with us - be seen in you and me. More than a clean and orderly house, may others see a pure heart. More than tree ornaments and lights, let them see the light and love of Jesus. More than cookies and candy, may they taste and see the Lord is good!

First Friday: Prayer for Children

"Behold, children are a gift of the LORD,
the fruit of the womb is a reward."
Psalm 127:3 (NAS).

Our Father God in Heaven, you are the Creator of the heavens and the earth. You have made us in your image. Thank you for the gift of children. Forgive us for the times we have neglected and mistreated this precious gift.

Thank you for the gifts and talents with which you have blessed the children in our world. Your plans for each of them is good. They are fearfully and wonderfully made!

Bless children with wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. Bless them, LORD, with good health and strength. Give children humble spirits and grateful hearts. May they always demonstrate a child-like faith in God. May each child honor and obey their parents.

Father God, you sent your Son to earth as a baby. You gave him, the name above every name...Jesus. I pray the children in our world will decide to follow Jesus. I pray each will know truth and obey God. Help them to make good choices. Protect our children from harm, injury, and disease. Protect our children from evil. Pour out your Holy Spirit upon their generation. In the holy name of Jesus the Savior...amen.

I'm Thankful

These are things for which I'm thankful:

* My prayer group meets to pray for our grandchildren and the world they live in.
* Moms who bring their babies to Bible study. It's awesome to see their desire to know God's Word.
* My church family looks like heaven. Red and yellow, black, brown, and white...all precious people in God's sight.
* Pastors who boldly declare God's truth.
* Freedom to worship.
* I live in a city where churches work together for the cause of Jesus Christ.
* My parents faithfully took my brother and me to church, and taught us God's Word.
* I've been married to my husband and best friend for over 25 years. And he always has my back.
* God's provision is more than enough.
* Jesus sacrificed His life for me and you, so we could be forgiven, and live abundantly and eternally.

Have a blessed Thanksgiving!

For what are you thankful?

The Gift of Prayer

My granddaughter's soccer team hadn't scored a goal all season. Before a game, I prayed with Joy, asking God to protect her and her teammates from injury, to help them follow the rules and demonstrate good sportsmanship. I also asked the Lord to allow the girls to experience the joy of making a goal. I'm grateful God heard our request, and He was faithful to answer. The team made their first goal!

Every good and perfect gift is from God, our heavenly Father (James 1: 17). I'm thankful for the gift of prayer. We have the privilege to come confidently before God's throne. He hears us, and He answers. We are to pray all the time about everything, giving the LORD thanks. We can bring Him all our troubles and concerns. And He is not burdened when our request seems small and insignificant.

I'm grateful for the gift of prayer. I'm thankful God showed an eight-year-old girl she can pray anytime and about everything...even soccer goals!

Scripture References: Hebrews 4:14; Psalm 116: 1-2; Matthew 7:11; Philippians 4:6; Luke 18:1; 1 Thessalonians 5:17; 1 Peter 5: 7.

In what ways are you thankful for the gift of prayer?

Writing God-Honoring Holiday Letters

Psalm 78: 4 says, "We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done." (NIV). We can communicate God's greatness in a holiday letter.

First, pray and ask for God's direction. Ask Him to help you determine whom to write  and what to communicate.

Next, share a special memory or event, and elaborate on your feelings. Keep your letter short and readable.

Conclude with a sincere wish, blessing, or prayer. Apostle Paul concluded his second letter to the Corinthian church this way: "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all." 2 Cor. 13:14.

Finally, pray for your recipient before mailing the letter.

I wrote this letter to my niece, Madison:

Dear Madison,

Do you remember when we visited the Natural Science Museum's Butterfly Center? While you remained quiet and still, a butterfly settled softly on your hand.

A butterfly goes through stages. First a female butterfly lays an egg. Next a caterpillar hatches from the egg. Then the caterpillar feeds, grows, and sheds its skin before changing into a pupa. A time of waiting follows. Finally, the butterfly struggles to emerge. The new butterfly is unique and beautiful.

A big lesson I learned in my Patriarchs Bible study is when God gives you a promise, expect a time of waiting and testing before the promise is fulfilled.

Waiting for the fulfillment of God's promise reminds me of a butterfly. The promise is revealed, and followed by a season of preparation, waiting, and testing, just as the butterfly strives to get out of the cocoon. And finally, when it seems you will never see the promise come to pass, it arrives right on time, and you are left in awe.

The LORD has promises for you. While waiting for their fulfillment, you may be tempted to believe God has forgotten you. At times, you may feel the enemy is about to devour you. Other times, it may seem the trial is more than you can bear. But never give up. Remember Apostle Paul's words, "Fight the good fight of faith." When your promise comes, marvel in God's faithfulness! He always keeps His Word.

This Christmas season, may you be in awe of the wonder of the Promised Messiah. Merry Christmas, Madison! I love you!

The LORD is Creator

The Colorado mountains, vast blue sky, evergreen forests, and meandering river reminded me the LORD, great and awesome, is Creator.

Stars flung across the heavens punctured the sky's darkness. Gazing upon hundreds of points of light, I reflected on Isaiah 40: 26- "Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing."

A gentle rain and flowing river was my Heavenly Father's bedtime lullaby, and a peaceful sleep overtook me.

By the Animas River the next morning, I continued meditating on the words of Isaiah 40: 21- 31- "God sits enthroned above the circle of the earth and its people are like grasshoppers... The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth."

I am awed by God's Eternalness, grateful for His Faithfulness, blessed by His Goodness, created for His Glory.

What reminds you the LORD God is Creator?

First Friday Intercession: Adopted Children

My friend, Leeann, and her husband adopted two Vietnamese children. Together, they became a family. These parents loved, nurtured, disciplined, protected, educated, and provided for their daughter and son. They taught their kids to love and serve God. These children have access to everything the parents own. The relationship does not change based on behavior.

These children are chosen. They are wanted. They are loved. They belong. It's what our Heavenly Father did for us. Scripture tells us God predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ. It is his will and pleasure (Ephesians 1: 5).

November is National Adoption Month. Let the children of God rejoice!

Our Father God in Heaven, how awesome is your great love for us. Thank you for loving, choosing, and redeeming us. Thank you for adopting us into your family. Thank you for leading us by your Spirit and making us heirs. Open our eyes to see the needs of children without families. Help us  care for orphans. Bless those who desire children with your favor, wisdom, and the resources necessary to bring them home. In the Name of Jesus, our Savior, amen.

What's your adoption story?

Restoration Man

The grass was thick, green, and freshly mowed. The tree provided cool shade. Except for the blue tarp on the roof, my house looked normal. From the outside, no one knew that things inside were a mess.

Lightning hit our home. The attic burned. Now displaced, I stared at collapsed ceilings and insulation piled on the floor. Filthy, ruined carpet along with mildewed walls produced a nauseating odor.

A restoration company arrived to remove debris and pull the carpet. The company guaranteed our house would be like new.

My circumstances reminded me how one's life can look great on the surface, while inside, it's cluttered with rubble. The consequences of a small spark of sin brought ruin. Things collapsed, leaving wreckage and despair.

Has your life looked like my house? Jesus is the Restoration Man, the only One who can clean up the rubble, the debris, the trash, the ruin. He doesn't come to make new things, but to make all things new. Allow today to be your day of restoration.

"Lord, heal me, and I will truly be healed.
Save me, and I will truly be saved.
You are the one I praise."
Jeremiah 17:14 (NCV)

How has God restored you?

Praying Friends

I joined a grandmothers prayer group because I believe communicating with God is powerful and effective (James 5:16). I believe God hears our prayers, and He answers (Psalm 116: 1-2).

My group prays for our grandchildren  and the world they live in. We experience God's Presence strength, help, hope, and peace. We encourage one another. We're committed. They are my "go-to" friends when I have a prayer request.

Do you have trusted friends with whom you pray? I encourage you to form or join a group. Record your requests and the LORD's answers. Pray consistently, and keep confidences. Thank God for all the great things He does!

What blessings have you and your praying friends experienced? Please leave a comment. I'd love to hear from you!

My "Moses" Complex

I'm a girl with a "Moses" complex.

God (calling from the burning bush): "Moses!"

Moses: "I'm here."

God: "You are going to lead my people out of Egypt. Now go tell Pharaoh."

Moses: "Who me? I'm not a good speaker."

God: "I'll help you."

Moses: "Please pick someone else."

God: "Your brother can go too. Now get on with it!"

Overwhelmed with love and a heavy concern about the culture, Bobbye held her first grandchild. Her mother's and grandmother's prayers resulted in Bobbye's relationship with the Lord. As God helped Bobbye encourage others to pray for their grandchildren, she began "Praying Grandmothers." The Lord also gave her a vision of grandmothers praying together throughout the world.

My "Praying Grandmothers" involvement came after my husband and I moved to Trinidad and Tobago. Not long after our arrival, the Lord led me in a direction I did not expect, nor believed I was qualified. He's like that- calling an old man to become the father of multitudes, a shepherd boy to be king, fishermen to be evangelists, and a young virgin to bear the Savior of the World. He nudged me to lead a grandmothers prayer group. My response - "Are you kidding me? I'm not even a good pray-er. And, I don't know any grandmothers here!" I pondered. I struggled. My very own "Moses" moment. I argued with God like Moses did. I prayed...

I gave in. "Alright, if that's what You want me to do, I know You'll make things happen. Help me meet grandmothers."

The Lord answered. My new friend Lucy, a grandmother and an intercessor, was exactly the kind of woman I needed. She introduced me to others possessing a strong desire to pray for their grandchildren.

The plan did not fall into place. I encountered challenges, delays, frustration, and doubt. But, I stayed the course.

Our "Praying Grandmothers" group was like a tiny seed planted in my heart a full year before it grew to reality. Moses led God's people out of 430 years of Egyptian slavery. My task appeared simpler: lead this little band of grannies, Lucy, Diane, and Ava, in a one hour prayer meeting.

We met once a month, and committed to pray for each other's grandchildren. We recorded our requests. We prayed for ten-year-old Colin's peaceful transition as he shuttled back and forth between his divorced parents, teenager Kristel's freedom from nicotine addiction, and young  Darren to be united with his mother. Afterwards, we waited expectantly for our faithful God's answer. As the Lord answered, we rejoiced and praised Him.

God set an eternal plan in motion, and He allowed me- the "Moses" complex girl, to participate. Grandmothers will "tell the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power, and the wonders He has done (Psalm 78: 4). I'm one of those voices.

When God assigned you a task, did you attempt to convince Him to find someone else? What was the result? I'd love to hear your comments!

Pastor Appreciation

God has given the church leaders to prepare His people for service (Eph. 4: 11- 13). I appreciate my church pastors because they are not wishy-washy about Biblical truth. Each one boldly and lovingly speaks God's truth, even when the message is unpopular.

October is "Pastor Appreciation Month". Throughout the month, be mindful to pray for, encourage, and show gratitude to your church leaders. Please join me as we intercede for pastors:

LORD God, thank You for those You assigned to lead our congregations. Forgive us LORD when we neglect to pray for these men and women.  Fill them with Your Spirit and wisdom. Bless them and their families with good health and strength. Give them courage preach the good news of Jesus Christ. May the fruit of the Spirit - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control- be evident in their lives. When weary, please renew them. Protect them and their loved ones from evil. Remind us to show gratitude and honor to Your servants. In the Name of Jesus, amen!

What do you appreciate about your spiritual leaders?

ACTS of Prayer

Asking God for stuff filled my prayers along with a "Thank you" or two, until a youth minister taught me the acronym ACTS:

A - Adoration - Adoration is worshipping, showing honor, and expressing our love to God.
"I love you, O LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock, my fortress and  my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, and my stronghold." Psalm 18: 1-2 (NIV).

C- Confession - To confess means to admit wrongdoing; to acknowledge our sin.
"Against You, You only, I have sinned and done what is evil in Your sight..." Psalm 51: 4 (NAS).

T- Thanksgiving - Thanksgiving is speaking gratitude to the LORD for the great things He has done.
"...We thank You and praise Your glorious name." 1 Chronicles 29: 13 (NKJV).

S- Supplication - Supplication is humbly making a request of  God.
"Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my rock and my Redeemer." Psalm 19: 14 (NAS).

I discovered an easy way to explain ACTS to children at Preschool Sunday School Central:

Adoration means "I love you!"
Confession means "I am sorry!"
Thanksgiving means "Thank you!"
Supplication means "Please!"

I shared ACTS with my seven-year-old granddaughter, Joy. I explained ACTS is a tool to help her pray, rather than a rule she has to obey. I encouraged her to include each part- even if she got them in different order. Then, I had her write a prayer using her own words. She wrote:

"Dear Jesus, I love you! I am sorry for hitting my sister. Thank you for my family. Please help me to cherish your word in my heart. Amen."

Using ACTS helps move our prayer life from not only asking God for things, but also praising God, confessing our sin, and giving Him thanks.

How can using the ACTS acronym benefit you?

"Book It!" Helping Kids Memorize Scripture- Part 3

Moses instructed the people of Israel to love the LORD and teach God's commands to their children. Parents were to impress and talk about them in all situations. God's commands were to be tied and bound to hands and foreheads, and written on the doorframes of houses and on gates. Moses exhorted the people not to forget the LORD ( Deut. 6: 4- 12 ).

Kindergarten students at our Christian school memorized Bible verses beginning with each letter of the alphabet. I tucked the idea in my brain, and retrieved it when my granddaughter started kindergarten. Together, we made an "ABC Bible verse" scrapbook.

Help children memorize and retain Scripture by including verses in a scrapbook or photo album, journal, or digital book. Not only will they have written reminders of God's Word, but their recorded family history as well.  An "ABC Bible verse" album also makes a great baby shower or birthday gift.

On each page include:

1.  A page title. For the "A" memory verse, the title is simply "A".  I use a sticker letter "A".

2.  The memory verse and reference (typed or handwritten).

3.  A photo (or drawing) illustrating the verse. For the "A" verse, my grandchildren dressed up in costumes and held props.

4.  A caption including the "who", "what", "where", "when" details describing the photo. When children are in the photo, include their ages.

5.  Add a few decorative stickers (optional).

I recommend using photo safe products. Look for "acid-free" labels. And pray, asking the Lord to give you creativity to help teach and impress God's Word upon the young ones in your life!

"A" verse: "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,"
Rom. 3: 23 (NIV)

In my next post, I'll share some of the Scriptures and photo ideas used in our "ABC Bible verse" scrapbook. Please share your tips for helping kids memorize God's word in the comments section. Thank you for visiting my blog.

Pray It! Helping Children Memorize Scripture- Part 2

As a young adult, I feared praying aloud. I lacked confidence to speak the right words at the appropriate time. Learning to pray God's Word radically changed my prayer life. Incorporating Scriptures into my prayers helped me pray God's will be done.

2 Timothy 3: 16- 17 tells us,  "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work" (NKJV). Judson Cornwall, author of Praying the Scriptures: Communicating With God in His Own Words, said, "When we let the Bible become our prayer, we are praying an inspired vocabulary."

Teach children to pray the Bible verses they memorize. This helps them pray God's will using God's words from their heart. Follow these simple steps:

  • Model it. Let your children hear you pray these verses out loud. Pray any time and any place. Be mindful of their attention spans. Pray short, one-sentence prayers for very young children. For older children, you can pray several sentences. Pray specifically for them by name, so they know you are talking to God about them.

  • Write it. Send your younger relatives cards and letters that include prayers containing Bible verses. For example, "Father God, thank you for Joy. Help her to obey her parents in the Lord, for this is right (Eph. 6:1). Amen."

  • Give your young people opportunities to pray out loud. I delighted to hear my six-year-old granddaughter, Joy, pray "Dear Jesus, thank you for this day. This is the day that you have made; we will rejoice and be glad in it." She was able to pray Psalm 118: 24 because that Scripture was in her.

Praying memory verses helps children use and retain Scripture. May the Lord bless your descendants with a desire to store up God's Word in their hearts!

In the comments section, please share Bible verses you've helped your children or students memorize.

Sing It! Helping Children Memorize Scripture- Part 1

David wrote, "I delight to do your will, O my God; your law (instruction) is within my heart." Psalm 40: 8 (NAS).

My favorite way to help my grandchildren memorize Bible verses is through song. Singing helps them to learn and retain God's word quickly and easily.

Using Scripture song DVDs and CDs is a simple way to teach God's Word. We play them in the car or before bedtime. Because the songs are short and repetitive, the children can learn several verses in a few minutes. I use Steve Green's "Hide 'Em In Your Heart" DVD. I used Amy Grant's version of "Thy Word" (you can view it on You Tube), to teach Psalm 119: 105.

Another option is to sing the verse using a familiar tune. For example, sing "Pray without ceasing" (1 Thess. 5: 17) to the tune of "London Bridge is Falling Down".  Add the first part of  verse 18 as the last line of your song. It goes like this- "Pray with ceasing, ceasing, ceasing. Pray without ceasing, in every thing give thanks!"

The third way to teach a Bible verse is by chanting or rapping it. Again, using 1 Thess. 5: 17, I came up with this chant: "Pray! Pray! Pray without ceasing! Pray! Pray! Pray without ceasing! Pray! Pray! Pray without ceasing! In everything give thanks! Hey!".

Play a singing game to check the children's retention. For each Scripture song they can sing by themselves, give them a star. When they get 5 stars, reward them with an inexpensive prize. I purchase these items at a dollar store. My grandkids love it when they "win" something, but the greatest benefit of all is getting God's Word in their hearts!

What Scripture memory techniques have worked for you? I welcome your comments!
